Free Kids Summer Meals
YUMA, Ariz. — Free kids summer meals are a vital safety net for families managing tight grocery budgets. While school is out of session, the Yuma School District One Child Nutrition Department has officially launched its annual Summer Food Service Program. The initiative provides free breakfast and lunch to local youth, which ensures neighborhood children maintain access to healthy, reliable nutrition.
Free Kid’s Summer Meals
The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds this community-wide program through its nationwide Summer Nutrition (SUN) initiative. Organizers emphasize that any child or teenager aged 18 or younger qualifies for free meals, regardless of whether they attend a Yuma School District One school.
District officials highlight that parents do not need to worry about paperwork, income verification, or pre-registration. Families simply need to bring their kids to a designated meal location during the scheduled service hours.
Six Separate Community Locations
To accommodate families, the free meal program operates daily, Monday through Friday, through July 17th. The district has strategically activated six separate community locations. Locations include elementary school cafeterias and the main district kitchen hub, ensuring broad geographic access across Yuma.
Strict federal funding regulations require that children eat all breakfasts and lunches on-site. This year, the district cannot provide bulk take-home meals or parent pick-up options.
Recognizing that proper nutrition involves the whole family, parents and legal guardians are welcome to accompany their children during meal periods. While visiting, adults with children can easily purchase a complete breakfast or lunch on-site for a small, nominal fee.
Local nutrition advocates stress that the program is critical to combating seasonal food insecurity, which spikes when school cafeterias close for the summer. Furthermore, this initiative ensures local children remain healthy, energized, and ready to learn when fall classes resume.
Daily breakfast service runs from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Daily lunch service runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
