Dr. Reetika Dhawan AWC President
YUMA, Ariz. — Arizona Western College marked a historic milestone on June 1, 2026, as Dr. Reetika Dhawan officially assumed office as the institution’s 10th president. Her first day on the job signals a deeply meaningful era of transition for the 63-year-old college, bringing a familiar face to the highest office of leadership in Yuma and La Paz counties.
A Familiar Face at AWC
Dr. Reetika Dhawan AWC President, is no stranger to the Matador family. For instance, she has dedicated nearly two decades of her professional life to this campus. She began her journey with AWC back in 2008. At that time, she worked as an adjunct math and physics instructor. Afterward, she steadily climbed the ranks through various faculty and administrative roles before securing her presidential appointment.
Breaking Regional Barriers
Her arrival in the president’s office breaks multiple long-standing barriers for the institution. Specifically, Dr. Dhawan makes history as the first woman to lead the college. She is also the first person of color and the first immigrant to serve as president. Originally, she immigrated to the United States from India in 2007. Before that move, she had launched her teaching career there in 2001.
In a written address, Dr. Dhawan expressed a profound sense of responsibility regarding her trailblazing new role. “I carry that honor with humility,” she stated. Furthermore, she noted her deep awareness of the responsibility for future students. Ultimately, she emphasized that this milestone is fundamentally about the community rather than the title.
A Deep Understanding of Students
District Governing Board Chair Dennis Booth highly praised her readiness for the role. In fact, he noted that her extensive background as a faculty member gives her an authentic advantage. Therefore, she possesses a deep understanding of the unique student and employee experiences across all regional campuses.
The Summer Listening Tour
Rather than executing immediate changes, AWC president Dr. Reetika Dhawan plans to lead with open ears. She openly stated that she does not have all the answers yet. As a result, the new president will spend her summer conducting an intensive listening tour. During this tour, she will meet directly with students, faculty, community leaders, and regional partners. This approach will allow her to gather crucial outside perspectives.
Looking to the Future
Organizers will use the insights from this summer tour to finalize a collaborative 100-day priority plan. Naturally, this plan will align with the college’s existing Strategic Plan 2028. Dr. Dhawan will officially share her strategic vision with the entire campus community when the upcoming fall semester begins.
