YUMA, Ariz. — No matter how far you go or how high you climb, there is nothing quite like returning to your old stomping grounds. And no trip back to Yuma is complete without stopping by an absolute local institution.

Former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion and proud Yuma native Cain Velasquez was recently spotted back in town doing what any true Yuman does best: grabbing a legendary meal at Mr. G’s Drive-In.

For local fans, seeing Velasquez back in his old stomping grounds brought an extra boost of hometown pride. Long recognized not only as one of the most dominant heavyweight fighters in combat sports history, but also as a local hero. Velasquez’s presence always warms the hearts of community members who have cheered him on since his high school wrestling days at Kofa High.

“You can take the champ out of Yuma, but you can’t take Yuma out of the champ,” shared one excited fan who caught a glimpse of Velasquez ordering his hometown favorites. “And everyone knows that if you’re coming home, your first stop is Mr. G’s for rolled tacos and bean burritos.”

Traveling through Yuma with his crew, the champ made sure everyone got a taste of the real Yuma—ordering the classic trio of rolled tacos, a bean & cheese burrito, and his personal favorite, the machaca burrito.

Velasquez has always kept his desert roots close to his heart throughout his incredible athletic career, frequently shouting out Yuma on the global stage. His recent visit served as a great reminder of the deep connection he maintains with the community that raised him and supported him through every step of his journey.

Whether he’s in the ring or stepping up for the people he loves, Velasquez continues to show the strength, grit, and heart that define the Yuma spirit.

And as for Mr. G’s? It remains the undisputed champion of local comfort food. Even for heavyweight champions of the world.
